Children's voices from Malawi

The first story from kindergarten in Malawi, a project of social responsibility that Ria Grant Thornton, in collaboration with the Community of Sant'Egidio, supports to give a concrete hope and of educational future, of sociality and perspective of life, to 45 African children , between 3 and 5 years and a community of 400 family members in Malawi. Silvia Pavani, a volunteer from the center, tells us about it.

"Eduard was one of the first children to have attended the kindergarten. We went to visit his family in November 2012 under the indication of the head of the nutritional center John Paul II who knows almost all the families of Machinjiri, the huge rural area where the kindergarden and the nutritional center are situated.
Eduard was born with a malformation that prevents him from walking normally. He certainly can not run and he also seems to have trouble understanding. He is insecure, shy and seeks protection.
He lives with his mother, an older sister who at that time was very suffering (HIV-positive), a little sister who will then attend our kindergarten, and a grandmother. The mother is a prostitute and only in this way she can provide for the family.
In the early days, Eduard constantly sticks to my hand, remains always behind, participates little. The teachers continue to stimulate him, they never leave him alone.
Imagine pushing the "fast forward" button and reviewing Eduard after two years. He walks, indeed, he runs. He throws himself without hesitation in all the possible games, speaks and is the only one who manages to make his lively companion Chancy feel good. Even his dexterity has undergone an impressive improvement.
Eduard also had the opportunity to support a period of physiotherapy at the SOS Children's Village Blantyre Center, but what really allowed this child to overcome his problems was simply the fact that we could wait for our nursery and be followed with care. and love from the teachers.

La prima storia dall’asilo in Malawi, un progetto di responsabilità sociale che Ria Grant Thornton, in collaborazione con la Comunità di Sant’Egidio sostiene per dare una speranza concreta e di futuro educativo, di socialità e prospettiva di vita, a 45 bambini africani, tra i 3 e i 5 anni e a una comunità di 400 familiari in Malawi. Ce la racconta Silvia Pavani, volontaria del centro.

“Eduard è stato uno dei primi bambini ad aver frequentato l’asilo. Siamo andati a visitare la sua famiglia nel novembre 2012 sotto indicazione del responsabile del centro nutrizionale Giovanni Paolo II che conosce praticamente quasi tutte le famiglie di Machinjiri, l’enorme zona rurale dove sorge l’asilo e, appunto, il centro nutrizionale.

Eduard è nato con una malformazione che gli impedisce di camminare normalmente. Di certo non può correre e sembra anche avere problemi a capire. E’ insicuro, timido e cerca protezione.

Vive con la madre, una sorella più grande che in quel momento era molto sofferente (sieropositiva), una sorellina che poi frequenterà il nostro asilo e una nonna. La madre è una prostituta e solo in questo modo riesce a provvedere alla famiglia.

Nei primi giorni Eduard si attacca costantemente alla mia mano, rimane sempre indietro, partecipa poco. Le maestre continuano a stimolarlo, non lo lasciano mai solo.

Immaginiamo di premere il tasto “fast forward” e rivediamo Eduard dopo due anni. Cammina, anzi, corre. Si butta senza esitare in tutti i giochi possibili, parla ed è l’unico che riesce a far stare buono il suo vivacissimo compagno Chancy. Anche la sua manualità ha subito un miglioramento impressionante.

Eduard ha avuto anche la possibilità di sostenere un periodo di fisioterapia presso il centro SOS Children's Village Blantyre ma ciò che ha veramente permesso a questo bimbo di scavalcare i suoi problemi è stato semplicemente il fatto di poter attendere il nostro asilo e di essere seguito con cura e amore dalle maestre.

Eduard frequenta ora la scuola primaria e ci dicono che sta andando bene”
